Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis today expressed support for a proposal to send migrants whose asylum requests have been rejected by the EU but who cannot be repatriated to centers located outside the bloc.
"It's still in the idea stage, it's not developed yet. In principle, I see it as positive," he said after the summit of EU leaders.
"Those who do not have the right to asylum have no place in Europe and cannot stay here, and they must return to their countries of origin. "Only one in five asylum seekers whose applications are rejected in the EU can return to their countries of origin," he added.
Mitsotakis said his position will be fully realized when the bloc decides who will join the EU.
"The next step is to create a European framework for the return of rejected asylum seekers," he said. /AA
