Greek football player George Baldock has died at the age of 31. The media reported that the Panathinaikos defender was found dead in his home pool late Wednesday evening. The cause of death was initially unknown. Baldock was capped twelve times for the Greek national team and last appeared in the pre-European Championship play-off against Georgia in March, when Greece lost on penalties. He was not called up for the next duel with England in the League of Nations this Thursday.
Baldock, who was born in Buckingham, played most of his career in England, including for clubs such as Sheffield United. The defender moved to Athens only in July.
"Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the death of our former player, George Baldock," the English club said in a statement.
