Brazilians will regain access to Platform X after a Supreme Court judge overturned a ban imposed nearly six weeks ago as a result of Elon Musk's non-compliance with the South American country's laws, the Guardian reports.

X was blocked in Brazil, where it had more than 22 million users, in late August after Musk failed to appoint a local representative to pay millions in fines as part of a long and politically charged battle against the spread of extremist disinformation. right wing and anti-democratic content in X.

Experts and Brazilian authorities have partly blamed the social network for the spread of misinformation that led to the far-right riots that rocked Brazil in January 2023.

Musk, who has aligned himself with the far right, including former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, reacted angrily to the ban. He called Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes a dictator and "Voldemort".

But in recent days Musk appears to have backtracked, paying a fine of 28.6 million reais (£3.9 million) and appointing a Brazilian lawyer as X's local representative, as required by the country's laws.

With those steps in mind, Moraes wrote that he ordered "the end of the suspension and authorized the immediate return of X's activities in Brazil" in a legal ruling issued on Tuesday.

Moraes ordered telecommunications regulator Anatel to implement its decision. The network is expected to become available in the next few hours.
