A man has crashed his car into a group of people in Munich, Germany, leaving several people injured, German authorities announced.

Munich police confirmed that several people were injured near Dachauer Strasse after a car crashed into a group of people there, and they had detained the driver who did not pose any further threat.

The incident took place in the city center where members of a union had gathered for a demonstration. Witnesses described seeing people "crying and shaking" after the vehicle hit the crowd, reports aa.

At least 15 people were reported injured, and it was not immediately clear whether the incident was an accident or whether the driver deliberately drove into the crowd.

The timing of the incident heightened security concerns as Munich prepares to welcome dozens of world leaders and ministers from more than 60 countries for the Munich Security Conference that begins Friday.
