The statements of the US envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, towards the Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, are being considered unhealthy for Kosovo-US relations. According to political analysts, the statements of the senior American official that “the international community is united against Kurti and that his government is not a reliable partner” are serious. KosovaPress has also contacted the Government of Kosovo to comment on these statements of Grenell and the cooperation with the Trump administration, but they did not respond.
University professor Rrahman Paçarizi tells KosovaPress that Grenell reacted to Kurti after he gave himself the right to use relations with the US to win citizens' votes in the February 9 elections.
According to him, it is not very common for American officials to react during campaign times, but it has been proven that officials from the Trump administration are quite active and energetic.
Regarding this, he emphasizes that these statements towards the current prime minister and the candidate for prime minister from the largest party in Kosovo are not healthy for relations between the two countries.
On the other hand, political scientist Milazim Koci tells KosovaPress that despite the harshness of Grenell's statements towards Kurti, he does not believe there will be any major shake-up in relations between Kosovo and the US.
For such a thing, he says that the results of the February 9 elections should be awaited, but according to him, American politics is not done on a personal basis and in the logic of revenge.
Grenell said a few days ago that the United States needs reliable partners in the Balkans, while the government of Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, according to him, is not one of them.
In a post on the X network, Grenell wrote that both Republicans and Democrats in the US have repeatedly criticized Kurti “for taking unilateral actions that destabilize the region.” He said that “Kurti’s (Kosovo Prime Minister) rhetoric claiming to be close to the US is completely false.”
During Trump's first term as president, Grenell served as the US special envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
Even during that time, Grenell publicly criticized Kurti, calling him "anti-American."
Richard Grenell has now officially taken up the post of US special envoy for missions. US President Donald Trump signed the executive order on Monday evening, US local time. He praised Grenell for his role in the decision to put out the Los Angeles fire.
