COVID continues to be present in some parts of the world even in 2025, where according to official WHO data, 2 new cases of death have been registered as of March 2.800, of which 2.500 in the USA alone. Sweden follows with 79, Russia 67, Italy 48, Greece 35, Portugal 17, Colombia 9, Czech Republic 8, Ireland 7, Lithuania 5, Argentina, France, Malta 4, Chile and Romania 2 and Panama 1. A total of 777 million 594 thousand 331 cases have been registered worldwide with COVID-19 so far, of which 7.1 million have died - most in the USA 1.2 million. Over 3 thousand 200 victims have been registered in Kosovo. The countries that have not reported any deaths from COVID-19 so far according to the WHO are North Korea, the Falkland Islands, the Holy See, Niue, Pitcairn, Saint Helena, Tokelau and Turkmenistan. In the country where the pandemic broke out, China, 122 deaths have been reported. The presence of the new coronavirus was first confirmed in late December 2019 in China and then spread to other parts of the world, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a pandemic. Even five years after the outbreak of the coronavirus, its origin remains a mystery, KosovaPress reports. Two hypotheses have emerged - the virus passed from animals to humans in a market in Wuhan or accidentally leaked from a laboratory in this city. On January 25, 2025, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) said in a statement that the virus "most likely" came from a laboratory. The announcement came as a blow to China, which has long insisted that the Wuhan laboratory was not responsible. In response to the new CIA definition, the Chinese government doubled down on this position, KosovaPress reports. "The US should immediately stop politicizing and weaponizing origin tracing, and stop scapegoating others," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a press conference. Today marks five years since the first person to die from the coronavirus was recorded in Kosovo. The National Institute of Public Health announced that it was an 82-year-old patient from Dumnica e Podujeva.
