The Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, has called on the justice institutions to implement the legislation in force for the maximum punishment of violators. According to her, until now there is no punishment with a fine of up to three years, as provided by the article of the Criminal Code of Kosovo. This is what she expressed in the activity "Breaking the silence: Empowering Voices from Italy and Kosovo against violence against women", organized by the Embassy of Italy and the Jahjaga Foundation.

The ambassador of Italy in Kosovo, Antonello De Riu, said that the figures of domestic violence everywhere in the world are alarming.

"Violence against women is often shrouded in silence, forcing victims to bear the burden of their trauma alone, out of fear or shame; this silence represents not only a void, but also an obstacle to justice and their psychological rehabilitation. This is why it is essential to break this silence, giving voice to those who have none and creating a safe space for dialogue and support. In Italy, we are witnessing the growth of an empowerment movement; women are coming together, sharing their stories and experiences. This not only helps raise public awareness, but also provides a model of resilience for victims of violence. In Kosovo, women are doing the same, fighting for their rights and a better future." said De Rio.

The role of the institutions, according to the Italian diplomat, is essential for the victims to receive the necessary help.

The Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, criticized the justice institutions for impunity of violators according to the law.

"It is very important that there is implementation of the legislation in force. It is the duty of the Government, the Assembly of Kosovo to draft the laws, but it is the duty of the institutions of justice, and especially of justice, to strictly implement the duties and responsibilities of If we look at the Criminal Code, the offense of domestic violence is punishable by a fine and imprisonment of up to three years. So far, we do not have any punishment up to the maximum prescribed by the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kosovo I also use this organization to call on the justice institutions to implement with the highest responsibility the article related to domestic violence, to give the perpetrators the deserved punishment with a fine and imprisonment of up to three years. That's it what is provided by the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kosovo", Haxhiu declared.

The Chief Justice said that the necessary changes have been made to the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code.

On the first day of the global campaign "16 days of activism against gender-based violence", the former president, Atifete Jahjaga mentioned some of the names of women killed by their husbands.

"Gender-based violence is not a reality of Kosovo alone, this problem is affecting every society since violence knows no borders. It appears in all cultures, in every community, making this a globally worrying issue. The intensity and the way it is treated this phenomenon depends on many factors, including the legal and institutional response. Kosovo, as a new country, has made great efforts to create a strong legal framework against this social scourge, but the challenges lie in its full implementation and in the implementation of its effective. Even though we are a new country compared to countries like Italy, Kosovo has a fast and visible development in many areas the old one did not foresee that Kosovo would elect its first woman president", Jahjaga concluded.

Jahjaga also spoke about the challenges of that time during the leadership of the state, where she said that she had doubts that "as a woman, she will not succeed in a country led by men".

In the framework of the global campaign "16 Days of Activation Against Gender-Based Violence", until December 10, activities will be organized by institutions but also by civil society organizations in Kosovo.
