In the impossibility of disposal, a significant number of drugs and medicinal materials with an expired term have been collected in the central pharmacy near the University Clinical Center of Kosovo. Since 2010, there has been no disposal of drugs without a deadline in Kosovo.

Among the expired medications is Remdesivir, the drug that citizens bought at very high prices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The director of the Central Pharmacy at the KKUK, Dardane Mehaj, told KosovaPress that medicines and products without a shelf life are stored in special conditions, separated from other medicines.

For the director of the Central Pharmacy, the reason for the large number of expired drugs is the misplanning done by the clinics and hospitals.

It emphasizes the need to dispose of expired medicines as soon as possible in order to free up occupied spaces.

As for the process of disposing of these drugs, the Ministry of Health says that they are close to solving this problem.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Arsim Berisha, said that the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the German GIZ are defining a space for the destruction of medicines without a deadline.

On the other hand, while medicines and medicinal materials are expiring in the public health system, the citizens of Kosovo are continuing to buy medicines at high prices.

And the Association of Patients' Rights calls for an investigation by the State Prosecutor's Office for drug management.

Besim Kodra from this association finds the fact of the expiration date of the drugs worrying, while citizens are buying drugs at staggering prices in the private sector.

The law that provided for the regulation of the price of medicines for public purchases and the private market was approved in July of last year, but in the absence of a list for the price of medicinal products, its applicability has not yet started.
