Susan Smith, a South Carolina woman who admitted to drowning her two children 30 years ago, was unanimously denied parole by the board on Wednesday.
"I know what I did was terrible. And I would give anything if I could go back and change it," Smith told the parole board via Zoom. "I love Michael and Alex with all my heart."
On November 3, 1994, police confronted Susan Smith about her story and she confessed to the murders.
Susan Smith's ex-husband David Smith became emotional as he asked the board to deny bail.David Smith's current wife, Tiffany Smith, asked the board to keep Susan Smith in prison for life to give the family some peace of mind. She said her husband can't get out of bed some days because of the pain.
"Michael and Alex didn't get a chance at life. They deserved the death penalty," she said.
Susan Smith admitted to drowning her sons Michael and Alex in her car at John D. Long Lake. At trial, prosecutors argued the young mother had an affair and said her boyfriend ended the relationship because of her children.
Susan Smith is eligible for a parole hearing every two years starting at age 30. She has faced disciplinary action in prison, including sexual encounters with corrections officers, drug possession and providing contact information for her family and ex-husband to a documentary producer.
