Susan Smith, a South Carolina woman who admitted to drowning her two children 30 years ago, was unanimously denied parole by the board on Wednesday.

"I know what I did was terrible. And I would give anything if I could go back and change it," Smith told the parole board via Zoom. "I love Michael and Alex with all my heart."

At first, Smith lied to police and said a black man carjacked her and took her sons. Smith's husband believed him, and the new parents appeared on television to plead with the suspect to bring the boys home.

On November 3, 1994, police confronted Susan Smith about her story and she confessed to the murders.

Susan Smith's ex-husband David Smith became emotional as he asked the board to deny bail.

"This was not a tragic mistake... She deliberately set out to end their lives. I have never felt any remorse from her for that. She came very close to having me end my life mine because of the grief it brought me," said David Smith.

David Smith's current wife, Tiffany Smith, asked the board to keep Susan Smith in prison for life to give the family some peace of mind. She said her husband can't get out of bed some days because of the pain.

"Michael and Alex didn't get a chance at life. They deserved the death penalty," she said.

Tommy Pope, the prosecutor in the case, also asked the board to deny bail.

"Susan made a terrible, terrible choice to choose a man over her family," he said.

Susan Smith admitted to drowning her sons Michael and Alex in her car at John D. Long Lake. At trial, prosecutors argued the young mother had an affair and said her boyfriend ended the relationship because of her children.

Smith's defense said she planned to kill herself with her children, but got out of the car at the last second.

Susan Smith is eligible for a parole hearing every two years starting at age 30. She has faced disciplinary action in prison, including sexual encounters with corrections officers, drug possession and providing contact information for her family and ex-husband to a documentary producer.
