Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the administration of the newly elected US President Donald Trump can help end the war against Russia sooner, the state news agency Ukrinform reports.

In an interview for the public service Suspilne, he spoke about the relations between Ukraine and the United States, referring to previous talks with Trump on the resolution of the conflict.

"He (Trump) heard the basis on which we stand. I heard nothing against our position," he said.

Asked if Trump asked Ukraine to enter into negotiations with Russia, Zelensky said: "We are an independent state and during this war, I personally and our people, we are negotiating with the US, with Trump, with Biden, as well as with European leaders. , and we have proven that the 'sit and listen' rhetoric does not work for us".

The Ukrainian president said he believed that under Trump's leadership "the war will end sooner."

"It is very important to have peace, so that we do not feel that we have lost the best people because of the injustice that has been imposed on us. The war will end, but there is no exact date. However, with the team policy that will now run the White House, the war will end sooner. This is their approach and promise to their public, and it is very important to them as well," Zelensky said.

Otherwise, Trump has often questioned US support for official Kiev, saying he could end the war "within a day of being elected president."
