The US economy added just 12.000 jobs in October, well below market estimates, according to figures released Friday by the Labor Department.

The market's expectation for nonfarm payrolls last month was a gain of 106.000 jobs.

The unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.1 percent in September and was in line with market estimates.

The number of unemployed was 6.4 million in October, while the labor force participation rate remained unchanged at 62.6 percent over the period.

The new figures come just days before Tuesday's US presidential and congressional elections, with the economy a top issue for most voters. /AA
