Tirana International Airport has reported a significant increase in passenger numbers in the first nine months of 2024, carrying over 8,32 million passengers – marking an impressive 55% increase compared to the same period in 2023, according to a article published in "Travel and Tour World".

This extraordinary increase in the number of passengers highlights the growing importance of Albania as a tourist and business destination in Europe.

In September 2024 alone, Tirana Airport received 1,1 million passengers, reflecting an increase of 47% in annual terms.

These figures highlight the continued recovery and expansion of Albania's tourism sector – with Tirana becoming a key hub for tourism and business travel in the Balkans.

Airlines: "Wizz Air" leads the flights

"Wizz Air" appeared as the "leading" airline - which serves Tirana Airport from January to September 2024, performing 53,2% of flights.

The low-cost carrier has rapidly expanded its presence in Albania, offering a wide range of affordable flights to destinations across Europe.

"Ryanair" followed with 22,1% of flights, offering budget costs for travelers.

"Air Albania", the national carrier, covered the smallest part of the market with 3,7%, but remains an important "player" in Albania's connections with the main destinations.

The dominance of low-cost airlines such as Wizz Air and Ryanair reflects the growing demand for low-cost travel, as tourists and business visitors seek affordable flights to and from Albania.

Tourism boosted Albania's economic growth

The increase in the number of passengers at Tirana Airport coincides with a wider increase in tourism throughout Albania.

The number of foreign tourists in the country increased by 17% during the same nine-month period, reaching 9,7 million visitors.

This growth is proof that Albania has already become a tourist destination – thanks to its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage and affordable travel costs.

Mirela Kumbaro, the Minister of Tourism, recently shared these statistics, emphasizing the positive impact of foreign visitors on the country's economy.

With more than 7,26 million passengers in 2023 – an increase of 40% compared to last year – Tirana Airport is playing a leading role in the development of the tourism industry in Albania.

Passenger growth and future prospects

The 55% increase in passenger numbers at Tirana Airport in 2024 exceeded industry expectations and highlights the airport's role as a hub for leisure and business visitors.

The airport operator, TIA, continues to invest in improving the infrastructure and to cope with the growing number of tourists.

With airlines such as Wizz Air and Ryanair, an increasing number of visitors are choosing Albania as their ideal destination to explore South Eastern Europe.

Tirana Airport is expected to maintain its upward trajectory, while continuing to attract foreign tourists from neighboring countries and beyond.

The airport's strategic position in the region, combined with affordable travel costs and the allure of Albania's natural beauty, is likely to contribute to further economic growth – in the coming years.

A record year for Tirana Airport

In 2023, Tirana Airport welcomed 7,26 million passengers, an increase of 40% from the previous year, making it one of the fastest growing airports in the region.

The continued growth of tourism and the expansion of the airport's flight network contributed to this record performance.

With Albania already recognized as one of Europe's new tourist destinations, an increasing number of visitors are flocking to the country - to experience the picturesque beaches, rugged mountain ranges and historic sites.

Tirana, the capital, is also gaining popularity – thanks to its lively nightlife, cultural festivals and historical attractions.

Challenges and opportunities of Tirana Airport

Despite the airport's tremendous growth, it also faces challenges related to capacity and infrastructure management.

With the constant increase in the number of visitors, Tirana Airport must continue to invest in its facilities - to ensure smooth operation and accommodate the flow of passengers.

This includes upgrading terminals, expanding runway capacity and improving passenger services.

On the other hand, the growing demand for flights to and from Tirana presents an opportunity for further expansion of the airlines.

The introduction of new destinations and additional flights - will not only increase connections with other countries, but will also make Albania more accessible to international tourists.

Tirana International Airport recorded a significant increase in the number of passengers during the first nine months of 2024, supported by the popularity of budget airlines such as "Wizz Air" and "Ryanair".

The impressive performance of the airport and the high number of foreign tourist arrivals underline that Albania has become a major travel destination.

As Tirana Airport continues to invest in infrastructure and expand its flight network, the future looks bright for Albania's tourism and aviation sectors.

The country's rich cultural heritage, picturesque landscapes and growing business opportunities are likely to attract even more visitors in the coming years, further strengthening Tirana's role as a key gateway to Southeast Europe. /ATSH/
