US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has authorized the US military to strengthen its presence in the Middle East.

The Pentagon said in a statement that it could deploy forces on short notice and that the US remains focused on protecting US citizens and forces in the region, protecting Israel and de-escalating the situation.

"Austin has increased the readiness of additional US forces for deployment to better respond to a variety of contingencies. Austin has made it clear that if Iran or its allies use this moment to target US personnel or interests in the region , the United States will take all measures necessary to protect our people," Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder said in a statement.
