A military training plane crashed in Bulgaria and both pilots lost their lives, Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov confirmed today.

The L-39 ZA aircraft, the first designed in the former Czechoslovakia, was being used for practice for an air show scheduled for tomorrow when it crashed near the Graf Ignatievo Air Base in southern Bulgaria.

Then the event that was supposed to mark the 20th anniversary of Bulgaria's membership in NATO was cancelled.

President Rumen Radev, a former fighter pilot and head of the Air Force, was a co-pilot on a demonstration flight of the US F-16 fighter jet before the crash. The cause of the accident is being investigated.

The former Eastern Bloc country has been a member of NATO since 2004. Previously, they were armed and supplied mainly with Soviet-made equipment, and now the Bulgarian armed forces are increasingly equipped with Western equivalents.
