The total cost of the Olympic Games "Paris 2024" is revealed
The 2024 Summer Olympics have officially ended, as athletes from more than 200 countries took part in the closing ceremony in Paris on Sunday. The cost of hosting the 2024 Olympics was estimated to be around $8.2 billion, which would make the Paris Olympics the sixth most expensive of all time, summer or winter, according to a new analysis by WalletHub.
The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, were the most expensive ever, costing nearly $25 billion, according to an Oxford University paper, followed by the Tokyo Summer Olympics, originally planned for 2020 but delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The expenses included in that estimate are the reconstruction of the stadium, the opening and closing ceremonies and operational costs such as food service and labor wages, KosovaPress reports.
About $3.2 billion of France's cost was spent on infrastructure investment in urban areas of Paris ahead of the games, according to WalletHub. Improvements to highways, railways, airports and hotels and similar expenses are considered non-sporting by the Olympic Organizing Committee and are not included in some Olympic Games budgets.
The costs associated with hosting some recent Olympic Games have been so high that the host countries lost money. Brazil lost an estimated $2 billion when it hosted the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The Tokyo Summer Games saw costs rise and lost roughly $800 million, according to an ESPN report.
