The position of the Chief State Prosecutor for more than two years continues to be managed by acting. The opening of a new competition for this position by the Prosecutorial Council of Kosovo is considered urgent.

From this institution, they declare that they have not yet received any response from the President's office after resending the name of the candidate, Blerim Isufaj, although the latter did not decree Isufaj as Chief State Prosecutor in October of last year, on the grounds that there were some legal violations in the process of his selection.

KosovaPress has asked the Prosecutorial Council of Kosovo if a new competition is expected to be opened for the selection of the Chief State Prosecutor, but this matter was not mentioned at all in the answer given.

According to Bedri Gashi, who is the head of the Public Communication Unit in the KPK, this institution of justice has not received any response from the presidency.

"We inform you that the Prosecution Council has not received any response from the Presidency and that we will keep you informed in real time about the next steps", he told KosovaPress.

But it is the civil society organizations that, for the selection of the Chief State Prosecutor, are looking for a new competition and appointment process with integrity.

The director of the Kosovo Institute for Justice (IKD), Ehat Miftaraj, said that it is unfortunate that until now the prosecutorial system of Kosovo has not taken any action in terms of the election of the new Chief Prosecutor.

According to him, this inaction conveys the message that the KPK is abusing its legal and constitutional independence.

For the knowledge of the justice system, Ehat Miftaraj, KPK is interested in keeping this important position for the justice institutions as acting.

On the other hand, Levik Rashiti from the Group for Legal and Political Studies is asking the Prosecution Council to make the selection of the Chief State Prosecutor a priority.

Rashiti emphasizes that the selection process must start from the beginning.

The KosovaPress News Agency regarding the position of the Chief State Prosecutor, which is being led by acting as of April 2022, has also sent questions to the Office of the President of Kosovo, but until the moment of publication of the article, it has not received any answer.

Otherwise, in April 2022, Aleksandër Lumezi completed his mandate as Chief State Prosecutor, and from that time until today, Besim Kelmendi is exercising this position.
