The fire emergency is worsening in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, where at least 34 cities face a state of disaster due to the unprecedented number of fires recorded especially over the weekend.

Images broadcast by local television and citizens on social networks recall an apocalyptic scenario with the sky invisible due to the thick blanket of black smoke and air that makes breathing difficult.

In much of Brazil's most populous state, citizens face extreme pollution, respiratory hazards and major concerns.

Hundreds of homes have been evacuated, dozens of roads and highways are impassable and thousands of citizens are stranded without the possibility of reaching multiple destinations. /ATSH-ANSA/
