On the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the Ohrid Peace Agreement, the European Front has organized an academy on its legitimacy.

Bujar Osmani, a representative from the European Front, said that the Ohrid Agreement stands as a cornerstone of peace, stability and democracy in North Macedonia, supporting the aspirations of all its citizens for a just and inclusive state and society.

According to him, 23 years ago on August 13, 2001, the Ohrid Peace Agreement was signed, ending a period of war and placing North Macedonia on a path towards reconciliation, equality, justice, consensual governance and Euro-Atlantic integration.

Until, according to Osmani, the basic principles of the agreement have been violated with the new government.

But due to the recent political developments, Osmani said that the goal and purpose of this agreement has been undermined.

"Recent political developments in the new coalition government formed as a result of the elections held in May 2024 have seriously undermined the foundations of the aim and purpose as well as the basic principles of the Ohrid agreement. Irrational actions in terms of limiting the standards of political participation achieved with efforts over decades to guarantee the standards of all inclusion are contrary to this aim and purpose of the Ohrid agreement and the intention of the signatory parties", said Osmani.

Osmani also emphasized that the flagrant violation and ignoring of the political and electoral will of the second largest community in the country, the Albanian community as well as the non-majority community, is contrary to the 6th amendment of the constitution of North Macedonia.

Professor Arta Mehmeti Ademi also said that the Ohrid Peace Agreement ended the 2001 war, restored peace and aimed at legal regulation of the position of Albanians and other non-majority communities.

She said that during this period there are attempts to truncate the basic principles of the agreement.
