The number of Italian cities on red heat alert, when even the young and healthy are advised to stay out of the sun, is expected to rise from 14 to 17 on Monday, 19 on Tuesday and 22 on Wednesday, the Health Ministry said on Monday.

The long heat wave that Italy is facing will intensify, according to the Ministry of Health.

When an area is on red alert, it means the heat is so intense that it's a threat to healthy active people, not just vulnerable groups like the sick, the elderly and young children. / ANSA
