Hezbollah fired dozens of rockets from Lebanon as fears of full-scale war with Israel continue to grow.

The Iran-backed group said it was acting in response to Israel's attacks on Kfarkela and Syrian Deir in Lebanon, which it said had wounded civilians there.

According to Israeli media, it is said that about 50 rockets were fired from southern Lebanon towards the Upper Galilee.

The crisis in the Middle East has intensified following the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, a day after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander.

Recent video footage revealed that Israel's Iron Dome defense system was being activated.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that "most" of the 30 or so "shells" fired on Saturday night had been intercepted. No one was hurt. Israel said it fired at rocket launch positions in Lebanon.

"Following the sirens that went off in northern Israel overnight, around 30 shells were identified crossing from Lebanon, most of which were intercepted by the IDF air defense group. Shortly thereafter, the IAF struck the Hezbollah launcher that dropped the projectiles and additional terrorist infrastructure in the Marjaayoun area of southern Lebanon.”

Hezbollah confirmed the attack in a statement. "The Islamic Resistance included the new settlement of Beit Hillel in its fire plan and bombarded it for the first time with dozens of Katyusha rockets."

Escalating tensions have prompted Britain, the US and Australia to tell their citizens to evacuate Lebanon. Travelers are advised to avoid Israel and some airlines have suspended flights to Beirut and Tel Aviv.

Flights to Beirut by Air France and low-cost carrier Transavia France will remain grounded until at least Tuesday, their parent company said on Saturday. Turkish Airlines on Saturday canceled its overnight flights to Tehran for the second night in a row. /TelegraphUK
