Allegedly transgender Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has won her first bout at the Paris 2024 Olympics after her opponent left the contest after 46 seconds in tears.

Italian boxer Angela Carini entered the ring against Khelif, who had previously been banned from the competition for being considered a "biological male". Tsarini threw her helmet on the floor as the fight was abandoned, she then refused to shake hands with Khelifi and fell to her knees, wiping away tears, reports KosovaPress.

It is unclear whether Tsarini stopped the fight as a protest against Khelifi's participation or if the punches she took in the end came out too strong. Italy claimed before the war that it could only "adapt to the rules of the Olympic Games".

Speaking to Italian media after her retirement, Carini said she had "never felt a punch like that" when she was hit by Khelif and the "heartbroken" boxer was in Paris to "honor her father and represent her country ".

Khelif's participation in the Olympics has been met with backlash after she was previously disqualified from the Women's World Boxing Championships last year for failing a gender appropriateness test. However, the 25-year-old was allowed to take part in Paris because Olympic boxing was under a different governing body.

The Algerian was disqualified as his high testosterone levels did not meet the eligibility criteria. Chinese Taipei fighter Lin Yu-Ting was also disqualified from the World Championships.

However, the International Boxing Association (IBA), which was the governing body for the World Championships, was stripped of Olympic recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) amid ongoing governance issues. The IOC then approved the participation of both fighters with their own regulations less stringent than those of the IBA.

Ahead of Khelif's appearance in Paris, the Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) criticized the "baseless claims" against the boxer. "COA strongly condemns the unethical targeting and misuse of our esteemed athlete, Imane Khelif, with baseless propaganda by some foreign media," it said in a statement.

"Such attacks on her personality and dignity are deeply unfair, especially as she prepares for the pinnacle of her career at the Olympics. COA has taken all necessary measures to protect our champion".

Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi claimed before Carini's fight that their fighter was not competing in a fair race, amid Italian Minister of Family and Equal Opportunities Eugenia Roccella claiming that Khelif and Yu-Ting are transgender.

"I find it difficult to understand that there is no alignment in the parameters of the minimum hormonal values at the international level, which includes the European and world championships and the Olympics," said Abodi.

"If it represents the highest values of sport, the safety of female and male athletes must be guaranteed, as well as respect for fair competition. It will not be like this for Angela Carini", said Abodi further.
