Teenage duo Huang Yuting (17) and Sheng Lihao (19) carried on Chinese shooting tradition as they won the first gold medal of the Paris 2024 Olympics in the mixed team 10m air rifle competition today.

Chinese shooters have won their country's first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics more than athletes in any other sport, and that trend continued with Huang and Sheng triumphing today at the Chateauroux Shooting Center, KosovaPress reports.

Their 16-12 win, fending off a late challenge from South Korean pair Keum Ji-hyeon and Park Ha-jun, ensured China remained the only country to win gold in the mixed team event presented in Tokyo three years ago.

"When the Koreans were arriving, I wasn't paying too much attention because I was trying to stabilize at first, I told myself I have to do what I have to do," Sheng told reporters.

Alexandra Le and Islam Satpayev gave Kazakhstan the bronze medal with a 17:5 victory against the German duo of Anna Janssen and Maximilian Ulbrich.

Three years after China's Yang Qian and Yang Haoran won gold in Tokyo, reigning world champions Huang and Sheng topped the qualifying round ahead of their Korean rivals to signal their intent.
