UEFA has charged Spanish players Rodri and Alvaro Morata after chanting "Gibraltar is Spanish" during celebrations following their Euro 2024 European Championship triumph.

The Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) initially filed a complaint with UEFA about the "extremely provocative and offensive" celebrations by Spain's national team players after their success in the European Championship, KosovaPress reports.

UEFA then appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector into the calls by Rodri and Morata during the Spain team's celebrations at their victory parade in Madrid on July 15 at the city's Cibeles fountain. The GFA said they welcomed UEFA's decision.

European football's governing body has since confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Rodríguez and Morata. The charges include breaches of general principles of conduct, basic rules of decent behaviour, use of sporting events for non-sporting manifestations and bringing sport and UEFA into disrepute. A UEFA statement added that "the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) will make a decision on this matter in due course."

In footage circulated widely on social media, Spain captain Morata began chanting: "It's Spanish, Gibraltar is Spanish" - referring to the peninsula on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, which is British territory.

Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri - who was named the best player of the tournament - took the microphone on stage and joined in the song. Morata is heard saying to Rodri: "Man, you play in England".
