Within the framework of the fourth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in London, President Vjosa Osmani met the Prime Minister of Iceland, Bjarni Benediktsson, with whom she discussed Kosovo's journey towards the Council of Europe and the intensification of cooperation between the two countries.

Osmani said that Iceland was the country that gave impetus to the journey and efforts for membership in the Council of Europe.

"In the meeting with the Prime Minister of Iceland, Bjarni Benediktsson, we discussed the strategic importance of the successful completion of this journey, emphasizing that with Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe, our commitment to the continuous advancement of human rights triumphs," she said.

On April 16, Kosovo received the green light from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to join this mechanism. However, it was not included in the agenda of the meeting of the Council of Ministers in May, as Kosovo refused to take steps towards the establishment of the association.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that his government does not accept the conditionality with the establishment of the association, calling such a conditionality absurd.

The Council of Europe was founded on 5 May 1949 to achieve greater unity among member countries on the basis of their shared traditions of political freedom.

The Council protects freedom of expression and media, equality and minorities in member countries. It helps member countries to fight corruption and terrorism and to carry out appropriate judicial reforms.

The group of experts on the Constitution, known as the Venice Commission, provides legal advice to various countries around the world. Being an international organization, the Council of Europe cannot make laws, but it has the ability to promote the implementation of international agreements reached by member countries on various topics.

The most well-known body of the CoE is the European Court of Human Rights, which applies the European Convention on Human Rights.
