Poland raised fighter jets after Russia's latest attack in Ukraine
Poland has deployed warplanes to protect its airspace after Russia launched its deadliest attack this year in Ukraine.
The jets were launched after Russian jets "started firing missiles into Ukraine again," the Polish air force told the X network.
Seven people are believed to have died when shell debris fell on another hospital in Kiev's Dnipro district. As for the Ohmatdi Children's Hospital in Kiev, there are still current reports that two people have died, but now more details are known.
Both dead are adults, said Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko, one of whom is a young doctor. He adds that 16 people were injured there, including seven children.
Klitschko says seven other people were killed in a business center in the Solomjan district. Speaking separately to the BBC about the attacks, Klitschko accused Russia of committing genocide against Ukrainians.
"The whole world is seeing how Russian missiles and kamikaze drones killed Ukrainian citizens in our peaceful city," Klitschko said.
These coordinated Russian missile attacks in Ukraine come just before the NATO summit in Washington. Military support for Ukraine was already at the top of the agenda, but now it will be accompanied by an even greater sense of urgency, writes the BBC.
The timing of the attack, likely ordered by President Vladimir Putin, will be seen by many as significant as NATO leaders mark the Alliance's 75th anniversary.
These latest attacks underscore a request by President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has been invited to attend the summit, for more air defense — particularly American Patriots.
Ukraine has so far received only a few Patriots, which have been surrendered by the US and European allies. Although there are signals in Washington that additional air defense aid is coming soon, it will still not be on the scale of what Ukraine wants.
