The European Union's top diplomat warned on Monday that the chances of the war in Gaza igniting a wider conflict between Israel and Lebanon were increasing by the day.

"The risk of this war affecting southern Lebanon and spreading is also increasing every day," Joseph Borell, the bloc's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, told reporters in Luxembourg on Monday.

Borrell's comments come after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview with Israel's Channel 14 on Sunday that the "intensive phase of the war with Hamas is about to end," which will allow Israeli forces to shift their focus to the border north with Lebanon.

Borrell said he was "much more concerned" about the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese militia, than before, as there has been "more bombing on both sides of the border with Lebanon". "We are on the verge of expanding the war", he said. /CNN
