Elizabeth Blackwell on June 23, 1849, becomes the first woman doctor in the USA.

She supported medical education for women and helped the careers of many others.

In 1857, Elizabeth established the first dispensaries in New York. She published several important books on the issue of women in medicine.

Elizabeth worked in clinics in London and Paris for two years. While working she contracted an infection and lost the sight in one eye and returned to New York in 1851, giving up her dream of becoming a surgeon.
