Gender perspectives in chronic noncommunicable disease care delivery
On March 4, 2024, experts met to advocate for improving the gender perspective in health care. At the round table organized in Gjakova, professionals from various public entities and civil society raised awareness, especially, regarding the importance of the gender perspective in the prevention and management of NCDs.
The table started with a speech by Mrika Aliu, public health specialist with regional experience, who underlined the importance of integrating gender perspectives in the prevention and management of NCDs. Sebahate Pacolli Krasniqi and Dr. Sevdie Spahiu from the National Institute of Public Health presented data from 2022, highlighting gender-specific trends in HCWs in Kosovo. Mark Kaqinari, Senior Legal Advisor at the People's Advocate Institution, emphasized the deep impact of the gender aspect on health and human rights, while Besim Kodra from the Association for Patients' Rights in Kosovo, emphasized the importance of guaranteeing equal access to care for all patients with SJN.
The Director of the General Hospital of Gjakova, Mr. Hilmi Shala, stated: "Let's use this as an opportunity to examine the profound impact that our joint efforts can have on the health and well-being of our communities. Together, we can do much for a future where gender mainstreaming in health care is not just an aspiration, but a reality. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by non-communicable diseases so that they receive the care and attention they deserve."
The round table ended with a discussion on action steps for cooperation between public institutions, civil society organizations (CSOs), media and hospital care providers. The participants engaged in discussions exchanged ideas on how to promote a gender perspective in the provision of care for SJNs and how to promote collaboration across sectors.
