Parents who attack teachers must compensate schools, Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara said Wednesday amid a wave of violence that saw another teacher attacked.

Valditara said he and Justice Minister Carlo Nordio are preparing a "new specific bill" to force violent parents to pay fines and damages to institutes whose prestige they have damaged.

"In addition to tougher penalties for those who attack school staff, I am convinced that a further, specific penalty should be introduced - which we are working on together with Minister Nordio - for the reputational damage that schools receive from the aggression of their school leaders, teachers or staff in general", said Valditara.

"It is clear that anyone who attacks the school employee attacks the state, deeply undermining the credibility and authority of the institution," said the minister.

In addition to attacks by parents on staff, Italy's schools are also seeing a wave of stabbings, by students on students as well as in the latest case, by students on teachers. / ANSA
