At least 5 dead and 600.000 without power as storm hits US
Tornadoes swept through parts of the US and several states braced for major flooding after strong winds and torrential rains battered the country on Tuesday.
At least five people died and hundreds of thousands remain in the dark after storms blanketed much of the US on Tuesday. Tornadoes swept through the midwest and south of the country, storms were felt in the northwest and parts of the east of the country were threatened with flooding.
In the northeast, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency and New York City officials evacuated about 2000 migrants housed in a tent complex.
In Maine, Gov. Janet Mills delayed the opening of all state offices until noon Wednesday due to conditions from the storm.
The National Weather Service warned of possible major flooding in parts of Long Island in New York state with waves up to almost ten feet by Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, more than 600.000 power customers were without power early Tuesday evening, according to utility tracker PowerOutage.us.
