Lionel Messi won the Ballon d'Or, the eighth of his career, and dedicated it to Argentina and Napoli legend Diego Armando Maradona on what would have been his birthday.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star beat off competition from duo Erling Braut Haaland and Kylian Mbappé for the most prized trophy on a personal level.

This was largely thanks to his success with Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, bringing the trophy home for the first time since Maradona's team in 1986, reports KosovaPress.

It happened to be Maradona's 63rd birthday and Messi dedicated the Ballon d'Or to his mentor.

Maradona passed away at the age of 60 in November 2020.
