The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said on Friday that the EU is ready to consider "punitive measures" against Serbia if it does not meet the union's demands.

Borrell's statements came after the terrorist attack on the Kosovo Police in the north of the country.

"Measures have been taken regarding Kosovo. These are political and financial measures, among which is the suspension of high-level visits and events, with the exception of the EU-led dialogue. Those measures also have an impact on the financial support for Kosovo. The suspension is temporary and reversible and will be lifted once de-escalation occurs. At the same time, we are closely monitoring whether Serbia meets the EU's requirements and in case of non-compliance, the EU is ready to take measures into account," Borrell said in a written response to questions from Serbian media. conveyed AA.

Borrell's letter did not mention the clashes that took place between an armed Serb group and Kosovo police on Sunday.

However, he added that diplomatic efforts are continuing and the May clashes should not be repeated.

"De-escalation must happen now, on both sides. The violent acts of May 29, 2023, which left many North Atlantic Treaty Organization Kosovo Force (KFOR) troops injured, as well as citizens, law enforcement and media (journalists), are completely unacceptable and cannot happen again in the future. ", Borrell said.

In the early hours of the morning on Sunday, the sergeant of the Kosovo Police, Afrim Bunjaku, was killed, while other policemen were injured.

The serious incident took place in the village of Banjské in Zveçan, where Serbian terrorists attacked the police patrol. Three attackers were killed while eight people were arrested.
