German police have arrested 59 fans of French club Paris St Germain ahead of their Champions League match at VfB Stuttgart, preventing potential clashes with home fans, Stuttgart police said on Wednesday.

The German club hosts PSG in the final match of the league stage with both teams competing for a play-off spot that could lead to the last 16.

Police said they were made aware of planned clashes in Stuttgart and the French fans were arrested on Tuesday. They will remain in custody until Thursday, the day after the match, to avoid causing any trouble in the crowd, KosovaPress reported.

"Through intensive investigations and in close cooperation with the Paris police, the French hooligans were found at the main train station and in various hotels in Stuttgart," the city's police said in a statement.

Among other things, camouflage material was discovered. To prevent serious disturbances until the end of the Champions League match on Wednesday, the Paris hooligans were taken into custody until Thursday morning after consulting with the referee.

A total of 47 Stuttgart supporters, considered by authorities to be high-risk, have been banned from the city center.
