Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared in Oslo today that nuclear power plants belong only to official Kiev, after the US State Department suggested that American control of Ukraine's power plants could mean fewer attacks from Russia.
State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce addressed the White House's suggestion last night that Ukraine could benefit from the United States taking "ownership" of parts of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, implying that Russia might be reluctant to attack a power plant if it were operated by American engineers. Zelensky in his response claimed that all nuclear power plants belong to the people of Ukraine, reports the BBC.
He added that he did not directly discuss ownership of the plantations, but said that "if (the nuclear plantations) do not belong to Ukraine, they will not work for anyone."
Zelensky announced that Ukrainian and US officials will meet in Saudi Arabia on Monday, although they will be separated from talks between Russian and US officials. Regarding the occupied territory of Crimea, he said that it is an inalienable part of Ukraine.Crimea is internationally recognized as part of Ukraine, despite Russia's alleged invasion and annexation in 2014.
He also expressed that it is a "great gift to Russia" that Ukraine's membership in NATO has been taken off the table by Washington, following a decision by American officials that ruled out Kiev's admission to the alliance.
Recall, Zelensky was visiting Norway today, where he met with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.
