US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to begin the shutdown of the Department of Education during an event in the East Room at the White House on Thursday.

As he signed the order, Trump was surrounded by young children sitting at their desks. After they finished signing, the children could be seen holding their actions as the president did.

Trump spoke about the beginning of the dismantling of the Department of Education, telling Education Secretary Linda McMahon that she is "leading something that is so important" and that when she is done with the process, he will find "something else" for her.

"You're going to do a fantastic job. We hope you won't be there for too long. But we'll find something else for you, Linda."

Trump said some critical Department of Education programs will still exist, such as Pell Grants and Title I, and will be taken over by other agencies.

The Department of Education is responsible for administering federal funds for students with disabilities, who fall under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, along with Title I funding for low-income schools and federal student loan payments like Pell Grants. KosovaPress.
