President-elect Donald Trump has chosen former acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker as the new US ambassador to NATO.
"Matt is a strong fighter and a loyal patriot who will ensure that the interests of the United States are advanced and protected," Trump said in a statement.
He added that his election will strengthen US relations with NATO allies and stand firm against threats to peace and stability.
"He (Whitaker) will put America first," Trump said.
Whitaker served as acting attorney general from November 2018 - February 2019. He served as chief of staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Trump's cabinet is being formed after his victory in the November 5 election. He has so far announced names to head more than half of the 15 agencies. Trump will be inaugurated as president on January 20, 2025. /AA
