United States President Donald Trump said he agreed to "immediately pause" tariffs on Mexico for a month after a "very friendly" conversation with Speaker Claudia Sheinbaum.

"I just spoke with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. It was a very friendly conversation where she agreed to immediately supply the border between Mexico and the United States with 10,000 Mexican soldiers," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"These soldiers will be specifically assigned to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants into our country. We further agreed to immediately suspend the proposed tariffs for a one-month period during which we will have negotiations led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and high-level representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with Speaker Sheinbaum, as we work to reach an agreement between our two countries," the president continued, CNN reports. The 25% tariffs on Mexico were set to take effect at midnight. Trump also announced new tariffs on Canada and China over the weekend.

Earlier today, Trump said he held a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with a follow-up call scheduled for later today as the clock ticks toward midnight, 25% tariffs on imports from the northern United States.

The president's message offered no indication that he was willing to provide a last-ditch bailout on the tariffs. But the fact that a second conversation is scheduled suggests that talks are ongoing between the two leaders to meet Trump's demands to stop the illegal flows of immigrants and drugs across the border.

In his message, Trump also criticized Canada for some of its practices.

"Canada doesn't even allow American banks to open branches or do business there. What's up with that? Lots of stuff like that, but it's also a war on drugs, and hundreds of thousands of people have died in the US from drugs coming through the Mexican and Canadian borders," he wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Late Sunday, Trump said he did not expect anything "dramatic" to come out of his conversation with Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
