The implementation of the Washington Agreement would create a better economic climate for Kosovo, then also a political one, leading to the final agreement with mutual recognition between Kosovo and Serbia, says former Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti. In an interview for KosovaPress, he says that the government that will emerge from the February 9 elections must take this document seriously.
What is known as the Washington Agreement is an agreement on economic normalization between Kosovo and Serbia - reached at the White House in September 2020 under the then presidency of Donald Trump.
It is not known whether this issue will again receive the attention of the US administration after Trump is sworn in as the new president of the United States early next year.
But Avdullah Hoti, who at that time signed the agreement as the head of the Kosovar executive, says that the future government of Kosovo must work on the implementation of this agreement.
The Washington Agreement ensured recognition of Kosovo by the State of Israel, while the points related to the creation of air and railway lines between Kosovo and Serbia have not been implemented.
In addition to non-commitment to the implementation of this agreement, Hoti criticizes the government led by Albin Kurti for "undermining the main alliances", especially with the United States.
The government of Kosovo has also been criticized by the USA for actions that they considered unilateral. This year, the Kosovar authorities have taken several actions in the northern part of the country inhabited by a majority of Serbs - among them the closure of parallel Serbian structures as well as the ban on the use of the Serbian dinar.
In an interview for KosovaPress, Hoti also talks about the Brussels dialogue and the meeting that is expected to be held on December 17 at the level of chief negotiators.
The LDK MP does not have positive expectations in this regard, however, he hopes that the new American administration will give a new dynamic to the dialogue process.
In addition, he criticizes the government in terms of the economic aspect, where according to him there is a "complete failure" in this sector.
The mandate of the government led by Albin Kurti ends at the beginning of 2025, while the parliamentary elections that will determine the new composition of the Assembly will be held on February 9.
