Pope Francis is no longer using a mechanical ventilator to help him breathe at night and doctors believe his condition will continue to improve, the Vatican said today, in its latest report on the 88-year-old pontiff's condition.
The Pope has been in Rome's Gemelli hospital for almost five weeks due to a severe respiratory infection, bilateral pneumonia, which required further treatment.
"It has been confirmed that the clinical condition of the Holy Father is improving," the latest detailed medical information on his condition says.
The pope had to use non-invasive mechanical ventilation at night, which involves placing a mask over his face.
Ventilation is now "suspended," the Vatican said, adding that the Pope is still receiving oxygen through small cannulas under his nose. The Pope's doctors believe his infection is under control, the Vatican press office said shortly after the latest statement was released. The Pope has no fever and his blood tests are normal.
Pope Francis is said to be in stable condition and has improved over the past two weeks, but the Vatican has not yet given a timeline for his release from the hospital, as he is slowly recovering. KosovaPress.
