An eight-year-old girl who was raped in Bangladesh died from her injuries on Thursday, sparking strong protests across the country, reports say. BBC.

The girl was raped while visiting her older sister's house in the town of Magura, between the night of March 5 and the morning of the next day, according to a complaint from her mother.

The sister's 18-year-old husband, along with his parents and brother, were arrested and placed in custody, police said. KosovaPress.

At 13:00 p.m. on Thursday, the girl died after three cardiac arrests, spending six days in critical condition at the military hospital in the capital Dhaka.

The girl's body was brought by army helicopter to Magura, where violent protests took place.

At the girl's funeral, thousands of people demanded justice for rape victims and legal reforms for the safety of women and children.

A 2020 law provides for the death penalty for child rape in Bangladesh.
