There have been 18 matches in the eighth and final round of the first phase of the Champions League. Manchester City were on the verge of elimination after losing in the first half to Brugge, but managed to bring the score back in the second half.

Dinamo Zagreb managed to beat heavy favourites Milan in Zagreb, but it was not enough to survive in the elite competition after Sporting drew in Lisbon with Bologna. Juventus suffered a shock defeat to Benfica in Turin, but this did not affect the Old Lady's placement in the Top 24.

The top eight clubs in the standings qualified directly for the round of 16. Before the final round, only two teams were certain of progressing to the Top 8, Liverpool and Barcelona, and they have now been joined by Arsenal, Inter, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille and Aston Villa.

The clubs ranked ninth to 24th will advance to the play-offs for a place in the round of 16, with the clubs ranked ninth to 16th receiving preferential treatment, meaning they will have to wait for the return legs. These are Atalanta, Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid, Bayern, Milan, PSV, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Monaco, Brest, Feyenoord, Juventus, Celtic, Manchester City, Sporting and Club Brugge.

Clubs from places 25-36 have been eliminated from the Champions League, as well as from European competitions, and will not advance to the Europa League as in previous years.

The eliminated teams are Dinamo Zagreb, Stuttgart, Bologna, Shakhtar, Sturm, Sparta Prague, RB Leipzig, Girona, Salzburg, Slovan Bratislava, Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys.
