The Romanian court annuls the first round of the presidential elections.
The decision comes days after declassified intelligence alleged that Russia mounted a coordinated online campaign to promote the far-right foreigner who won the first round.
"The entire electoral process related to the election of the president of Romania is cancelled. The government will set a new date for the elections, as well as a new calendar program for carrying out the necessary actions," the Romanian Constitutional Court said in a statement.
The Constitutional Court's ruling, which is final, came Friday after President Klaus Iohannis declassified intelligence two days ago that alleged Russia ran a vast campaign involving thousands of social media accounts to promote Calin Georgescu across platforms such as TikTok and Telegram. , forwarded by TCh, transmitted by KosovaPress.
Despite being a major outsider who declared zero campaign spending, Georgescu emerged as the frontrunner on November 24. He would face reformist Elena Lasconi, of the Save Romania Union party, in a runoff on Sunday.
