They have gathered to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. However, leaders of the association Handikos say that they are not satisfied with the conditions that the relevant institutions are offering to this category.
The director of Handiko, Afrim Maliqi, on this occasion indicated that a small number of children with disabilities are included in education, since according to him, schools do not provide the right conditions for this category.
"Despite the many efforts that the Government has had and continues to do so, the situation still remains not good, in some areas, such as in the field of rehabilitation, the field of access, I necessarily have to mention the issue that is very important, which is education. It is estimated that only 12 to 13 percent of children with disabilities are included in education.
Maliqi mentioned various issues asking the prime minister to maintain close relations with their center. One of them was the possibility of renovating or building a new center, since what they are now was built in 2003.
And the Prime Minister of the country Albin Kurti, where he addressed the children and adults who were present, said that they are not the only ones in this category, and according to him, the state of Kosovo is with them.
"This year, the Government of the Republic of Kosovo has increased pensions for the category of persons with disabilities by 20 percent, and during the year 2023, the number of beneficiaries of the compensation scheme was 3 thousand and 6 people, as well as the value of the spent budget somewhere close to 11.5 million euros. But as the mayor Afrimi also said, after the full publication of the results of the population census, we will be able to have both the correct overview and the best planning for the future. For the first time we are initiating the law for deaf people, a concept document has been developed for the provision of sign language services for deaf citizens in Kosovo, then the office for good governance within the prime minister's office is publishing the laws and relevant documents in Braj writing for blind people in Kosovo. Until now, 339 assistants for children with disabilities have been employed in our country, and we call once again on the municipalities of Kosovo to apply because we have budgeted up to 500, so there are more opportunities than realization. On this occasion, we would like to show our commitment, children with disabilities are not only the burden of the family but also of our state, which helps through these assistants"he declared.
Prime Minister Kurti promised that they will increase the sensitivity, help, support and support of families with disabled people.
Part of the audience was also Eldin Gashi, 19 years old who is studying at a private university, since the University of Pristina does not fulfill the conditions that Gashi needs. He says that he has been discriminated against since his education until the state medical institutions.
Life experiences and problems were also shared by a mother, Fidajete Pllana, who takes care of her disabled child.
Parents, children and persons with disabilities who were present asked Prime Minister Kurti to improve conditions for them.
The meeting with Kurti was also used by a mother who asked the prime minister for her son's employment.
Kurti didn't leave even without a gift from Handikos. A book of personal challenges of a disabled person was presented to him.
