The National Assembly on Friday approved the establishment of a single-member joint-stock company (EAD) to run chains of stores where the price level for basic foodstuffs and other essential products will not exceed 10%.
The proposal made by the MP of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms - New Beginning, Yordan Tsonev, was approved with 117 votes in favor and 102 against, and two abstentions.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food will own the capital of the new company. The future stores will work mainly with Bulgarian manufacturers. The deputies gave the Council of Ministers a month to take all necessary actions for the establishment and operation of the company. Initially, the company's capital will be 10 million leva, BTA reports.
On March 13, the National Assembly's Budget and Finance Committee gave the green light to the creation of state-owned stores to sell Bulgarian goods at low prices, reports Kosovapress.
MRF-New Beginning MP Yordan Tsonev said the initiative "will shorten the food supply chain in this country and help reduce prices, which are sometimes unfairly inflated." He noted that similar stores exist in countries such as Germany and France.
