A 14-year-old boy was killed and five others were seriously injured in a knife attack in Villach, southern Austria on Saturday, the BBC reported.

Police identified the suspect as a 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker, who was detained at the scene in Villach, a city near the border with Italy and Slovenia.

Two of the five injured victims remained in serious condition, AA reports.

Police said a delivery worker helped prevent further injuries by driving his vehicle toward the attacker.

The driver, also a Syrian man, said he witnessed the attack as he was passing by and deliberately rammed the knife into his vehicle.

Due to Austrian law, the identity of the attacker has not been released, but police confirmed that he is a 23-year-old Syrian man residing in the country.

He had a temporary residence permit and was awaiting a decision on his asylum application.
