According to the reports of the European Commission (EC) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, North Macedonia together with Serbia has a high mortality rate as a result of air pollution, writes Euronews.

Of the neighboring countries, Albania, Bulgaria and Montenegro also measure high levels of pollution.

Exposure to PM2.5 particles caused an estimated 239,000 premature deaths in Europe in 2021, while 48,000 people died as a result of exposure to nitrogen dioxide, according to reports from the European Environment Agency.
