Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said today that it may be possible for his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu to visit the Netherlands without arrest, despite an arrest warrant from the International Court of Justice (ICC).

This softened the stance of his foreign minister, Caspar Veldkamp, who last week confirmed in Parliament that the Netherlands will cooperate fully with the ICC, explaining that this means that "they act on the arrest warrants issued against to persons located in Dutch territory."

Schoof said today that there are still scenarios within the Dutch obligations to the ICC in which Netanyahu would not be arrested, depending on the reason for his visit.

"The most important thing is that we have obligations arising from the contract (on which the ICC is based) and to respect them. In light of this, we will have to see how we would act if the prime minister of Israel came to the Netherlands. There are possible scenarios, also within international law, where he could come to the Netherlands without being arrested," Schoof said at the press conference.

Schoof did not specify the circumstances under which Netanyahu might come to the country, but said last week that it might be possible for the Israeli prime minister to visit a Netherlands-based international organization such as the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons without being arrested.

The ICC, which is based in The Hague, issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas leaders for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Although all EU member states are signatories to the Rome Statute, the international treaty that established the ICC, France said on Wednesday it believes Netanyahu has immunity from ICC action, given that Israel is not a party to it. Rome Statute.

Italy has stated that it is not possible to arrest him as long as he holds the office of prime minister.
