The death toll in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war in October 2023 reached 50.021 today, following the latest Israeli bombardment of the Palestinian enclave, local authorities announced.

"The number of people killed has reached 50,021 and 113,274 injured since October 7, 2023," the Hamas Health Ministry said in a statement quoted by the Spanish agency EFE.

Israel broke the ceasefire on Tuesday, March 18, and since then Israeli attacks have caused 673 deaths and more than a thousand injuries.

The offensive against Gaza was triggered by a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which caused about 1200 deaths and 250 hostages, LUSA reports.

During the ceasefire observed between January 19 and March 18, Hamas handed over hostages to Israel in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners.

The radical Palestinian group still has 58 hostages in Gaza.
