Manchester United have announced plans to build the largest stadium in the UK - a new £2 billion "iconic" 100,000-seat ground near Old Trafford. Once construction of the new stadium is complete, the club's existing home will be demolished.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said he wanted to build "the biggest football stadium in the world", which the club hopes can be completed in five years, reports the Daily Mail. KosovaPress.

United's announcement comes after an extensive consultation process about developing the existing stadium or building a new one. Old Trafford has been the home of Manchester United since 1910.

The club will continue to play at Old Trafford until the new stadium is ready.

Architects at Foster and Partners, who will design the project, said the new stadium will feature an umbrella design and a new public square that is "twice the size of Trafalgar Square".

Manchester United, which is currently £1 billion in debt, has not yet said how it plans to pay for the stadium. The club's chief executive Omar Berrada said it was "a very attractive investment opportunity" and he was "quite confident we will find a way to finance the stadium".

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire said the development could be financed because the revenue from a "multi-purpose stadium would outweigh the additional interest costs".
