The United States of America accused Venezuela of electoral manipulation and repression, saying that President Nicolas Maduro's announcement of a third term "lacks any credibility".

Officials in President Joe Biden's administration did not announce any new punitive measures, but did not rule out the imposition of additional sanctions.

"By engaging in election suppression and manipulation and declaring a winner without detailed voting results for each constituency, Maduro's representatives stripped any credibility from the supposed election results," a senior Biden administration official told reporters.

Nicolas Maduro was officially declared president-elect by the National Electoral Council (CNE) on Monday, with the opposition claiming victory and much of the international community skeptical of the results.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for full transparency in Venezuela's elections and said it is necessary to publish election results by constituency, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Monday.

Guterres called on political leaders and their supporters for moderation, Dujarric told reporters, adding that all electoral disputes should be resolved peacefully and that electoral bodies should carry out their work independently and without interference.

On Monday, nine Latin American countries called for a "full verification" of the election results in Venezuela.

Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay "demand a full verification of the results with the presence of independent election observers" and a meeting under the auspices of the Organization of American States, according to a statement shared by nine countries published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina.

Panama has suspended diplomatic relations with Venezuela and is withdrawing its diplomatic staff from the country until a full verification of the vote is carried out, President Jose Raul Mulino said. Brazil has previously called for "impartial verification" of Venezuela's election results. Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador said his government would recognize the final results.
